An Amazing Journey with Hand to Mouth is a series of about 6 short tasks set out for pupils (or staff) to explore a theme. We currently offer 15 Amazing Journeys.
In a journey, we offer children the stimulus and a short activity to give them the opportunity to think and reflect for themselves. With younger children (school years 1-4) this is facilitated by a DBS checked volunteer who will take 2 children around the journey. Older children are able to complete the journey alone, given the time and space they need, with adults on hand to help where necessary.
We want to provide children with opportunities that schools can’t usually offer themselves. Children often talk enthusiastically about our previous visits and recount in great detail what they have learnt, whilst teachers often say how calm their pupils have come back to class! Parents have commented on how our journeys have impacted their child’s attitude towards others and the world around them.
After every visit, we leave you with everything the pupils have produced and shared so that you can carry out appropriate follow up in school or talk to us about how we can help you in your next steps.
Practical notes:
For a journey we require a room the size of a classroom that is not a thoroughfare which we can set up an hour before starting. We aim to bring DBS checked volunteers with us from your local church or your own governors or parents.
Hand to Mouth will go into the classroom at the beginning of our visit to explain to the children what will happen during the journey. The children will come out of the class in pairs, up to a maximum of 8 out of class at once. They will return once they have completed the journey.
The class teacher will need to have other work prepared for the rest of the class.
